Video: Discus Dental Tooth Enamel Remineralization
Question:
Extreme sensitivity following veneers: I had 20 veneers placed due to a severe tetracycline stain.
The procedure altered my smile, although the overall cosmetic effect was pretty decent. However, eight months following placement, I am still experiencing extreme sensitivity to hot and cold, (I cannot swish tap water in my mouth when I brush).
In places around my gum line, there are thin margins where my own tooth is exposed. Also, I cannot comfortably bite anything crunchy, (nuts, chips, the corn meal on the bottom of pizza, bacon, etc.) without pain.
I am using Sensodyne and a special dental fluoride solution with no luck. What to do? ...Visitor from FL
Answer:
I am so sorry to hear that you are having so much discomfort. It certainly is rare, but not uncommon, that patients have that degree of sensitivity.
Usually if one is aware of a potential sensivity issue, a different bonding procedure can be employed.
Probably the sensitivity is a result of over etching the teeth with phosphoric acid or there is cut tooth structure exposed at the margin near the gum line. Using fluoride and Sensodyne toothpaste may help, but you may want to have your dentist try sealing the marginal areas with sealant such as Admira made by Voco.
Your last option would be root canal therapy, which I would avoid unless absolutely necessary. Perhaps with time it may subside. If it is the result of poorly fitting veneers, you may have to consider replacing some of them.
