Question:
Sensitive Teeth - Weak Tooth Enamel? My wife is having sensitive teeth, as she complains of toothache as soon as she eats something sweet or cold.
As per local dentists they say that its due to weak enamel layer and she just has to get the filling done in the open spaces between the teeth and the gums. Is there any way to get the enamel layer back on the teeth? She just can't eat anything sweet or cold.
Is there any solution or paste which she can apply on her teeth and get her teeth enamel back? ...Visitor from India
Answer:
There are several causes for sensitive teeth, the main ones being: incorrect and aggressive brushing technique, cavities due to decay, poor oral hygiene.
Periodontal disease also leads to the gum moving further along the tooth towards the root. This leaves a greater area of the tooth exposed, giving the appearance of longer teeth. This also weakens the tooth support system, and as a result the teeth can move around, and even fall out.
Depending on the cause, the area can be treated either by correct brushing and applying a desensitiser which comes in gel or liquid form or by filling the cavities. Your dentist should be able to guide you.
Very gentle brushing with a soft toothbrush with proper technique along with good quality toothpaste or gels can help the situation. Depending on the cause, fillings can be avoided with correct brushing techniques and using effective pastes and gels.
It is best to avoid cold foods and drinks
