Question:
Lingual braces to fix severe overbite: I have about a 8mm overbite.
I have had a brace before but my teeth have moved since my wisdom teeth have came through, causing the bottom and top teeth to move out of line.
I do not have diagonal stick out teeth, however... just an alignment problem. Would lingual braces correct this? I am 25 years old and do not want visible braces. ...Visitor from Wales England U.K.
Answer:
Yes, lingual braces would work to correct the alignment problem, however I do have some concerns with the 8mm of overbite.
Without proper records, I cannot give you a definitive diagnosis, but I do believe your severe overbite is a skeletal problem.
Since you are essentially a non-growing adult, to eliminate 8mm of overbite would require possibly extracting teeth in the upper jaw bone to create enough space to retract the upper front teeth.
If the underlying problem is due to a deficient lower jaw or a chin that is setback, taking teeth out could adversely affect your facial profile.
The best mode of treatment would be a phase of orthodontic treatment where lingual braces could be used and advancing the lower jaw bone surgically to align your bite and reduce the excessive overbite.
You will need to seek consultation with an orthodontist to get the proper diagnosis.
