Question:
Trust my Dentist? I'm 27 and my upper wisdom teeth have just begun to break through the gum. My dentist recommended having them out - he would do it in his office under local anesthesia.
He mentioned that it looks as if the roots have grown slightly into my maxillary sinuses and that this could cause minor complications. He acted as if it were no big deal. I already have some sinus problems as well as severe TMJ compression.
Is this really just a minor procedure or should I see someone maybe a little more specialized due to the involvement of my sinuses? What is the risk of having permanent problems in this situation? ....Visitor from NJ
Answer:
If the roots extend into the sinus an oro-antral fistula may be created if the wisdom tooth is extracted. This creates a passage between your mouth and your maxillary sinus. Properly managed this can be a minor complication.
Oral surgeons have many additional years of training and experience in these types of cases. Perhaps you should seek a second opinion.
