Question:
Implants and Sinuses: Having lost 3 teeth in my upper left jaw my specialist has recommended implants.
Another specialist however informed me that you have to be careful not to drill into the sinus cavity.
My specialist says that's not really a concern - is this true? ....Visitor from Maidenhead Berkshire UK
Answer:
When placing implants in the upper jaw the maxillary sinus should not be violated. In your situation there may be adequate alveolar bone to place the implants without requiring any bone grafting or augmentation procedures.
Innova Corporation manufactures a friction fit implant line called Endopore that can be used in situations where as little as 3.0mm of bone remains. The surface of these implants are covered with thousands of titanium beads. This increases the surface area tremendously, thereby increasing the integrity of the completed implant.
Since the shortest implant in the Endopore system is 5.0mm, the additional height is gained by raising the sinus through the opening made for the implant. The procedure is called a sinus lift through crestal approach.
Most implant systems have translucent templates that are placed over the radiographs (x-rays) that allow the surgeon to determine if there is sufficient height of bone. Ask your surgeon to show you how close the implant will come to the sinus.
