Sinus Lift Dental Implant Pain Mitchell Pohl

Question:
If an implant is in your sinus are you more likely to get an infection?

Do they put implants in sinus or is that not advisable? ....Visitor from FL

Answer:
I am assuming from your question that you are referring to inadvertently placing implants through the sinus floor into the sinus.

Quite often we try to anchor the implant into the sinus floor because the bone is more dense and will help stabilize the implant. Often times we purposely perforate the sinus floor and try and elevate the sinus membrane.

The resulting space between the floor and the membrane forms a clot and eventually becomes bone. On the other hand, sometimes the sinus membrane is perforated and the implant extends past the membrane.

To this date I have not seen any problems from this occurence. The tissues in the sinus grow over the implant and the area is sealed. If the implant were contaminated, maybe it could result in an infection. However, we always place patients on a prophylactic antibiotic regimen which is important to the implant success.
