Question:
Sinus infection and TMJ: It seems like everytime I get a sinus infection my teeth on the right side of my mouth will not close down.
Can a sinus infection cause the TMJ to do this? ....Visitor from TN
Answer:
You are very perceptive!
When you get a sinus infection in the maxillary sinus (below your eye and above your top teeth), the floor of the sinus which is soft tissue swells and makes the top teeth longer in your mouth.
Treating the infection will resolve the swelling and your bite goes back to normal. So it's not the TMJ that is changing, but the swelling in the floor of the sinus changes the position of the top molars and affects the TMJ.
If this happens often you might want to look into allergy testing or topical intranasal steroid sprays. I would recommend a visit to an otolaryngologist to evaluate your condition.
