Question:
Loss of Smell and Sinus Problems After a Root Canal: Six (6) months ago I had a root canal performed on my upper right tooth next to my wisdom tooth.
Once the procedure was over the Doctor told me that there was a problem with one of the nerves while performing the root canal. Well, as a result 1 week later I lost my sense of smell and now I have a problem with Chronic Sinusitus.
I have been to two (2) different ENT Specialist and both have told me they could treat the sinuses but I will probably never smell again. I'm wondering if a nerve was damaged or if somehow something happened to my sinus cavity. What kind of a Doctor should I be seeing? ....Visitor from NY ....Visitor from NY
Answer:
The roots of the second maxillary molars sit next to the sinus. If the infection reached the sinus or if an instrument perforated the sinus then an infection can reach this region. After clearing the sense of smell, it may return.
I would suggest seeing an endodontist and possibly an Oral Surgeon along with the ENT doctor to help with this concern.
