Question:
5 year old teeth grinder: My five year old daughter recently lost her first tooth, and now
has a second loose tooth. She already has the first permanent tooth erupted through.
She has been diagnosed by two pediatric dentists with dental hypoplasia. Therefore, she has had several teeth repaired.
My first question is: Is she two young to be loosing her teeth?
Second, she has caps over four bottom teeth - how will this affect her loosing those teeth?
She grinds her teeth everytime she sleeps. She has grinded her front teeth to almost half their size. Now she is getting permanent teeth. I am concerned because she shows no signs of slowing down that grinding. What should we do? ...Visitor from OH
Answer:
I'm not sure if the hypoplasia is on adult teeth or only primary teeth.
1. She is not too young to be losing primary teeth.
2. The caps are inconsequential.
The grinding is likely due to the hypoplasia. If your dear child does develop habits from it, it may continue into and throughout adulthood. Regardless, there is nothing at present that should be done besides monitoring her as her adult teeth develop. Revisit this issue when she is around eight with a certified orthodontist in your area.
