Question:
Daytime Clenching: I am a 22 year old female in excellent health. I am always clenching my teeth during the day, not the night. I do not do drugs or any other stimulants, not even coffee.
I do not feel that I am a stressed out person, but these clenching episodes occur when I am deep in thought, and not necessarily stressed. I am very worried that I will cause damage to my jaw if I don't take care of it now.
My other concern is that I might have a chemical imbalance that may be causing the clenching, since I cannot think of any other reason why this would be happening. My question is, could this be the result of a chemical imbalance, and if so, what steps could I take to treat it? ...Visitor from MA
Answer:
If you say that you are pretty sure it is not stress, then I would ask if you have a history of orthodontic (braces) treatment. If that is the case perhaps your vertical dimension is not correct and is causing you to clench.
May I suggest that you schedule an evaluation with a dentist that treats TMJ disorders? It is highly unlikely that your condition is a result of a chemical imbalance. Early treatment of this disorder is important to prevent damage to your joints and teeth
