Question:
Orthodontic Braces for Grinding: I had braces put on to stop my grinding and correct an overbite, I thought they would help.
But now my teeth are worse off. My teeth now are pushed in and I get these really bad headaches ever so often.
What can I do to fix my teeth, I paid to have a beautiful smile and I don't have one. ...Visitor from FL
Answer:
I am sorry to hear that you have had such a negative experience.
Often times orthodontics is done to correct a bite relationshi; however, it may not necessarily eliminate a grinding or bruxing habit. There are other factors that have to be analyzed to understand why bruxism is occuring.
Even though a patient may have had orthodontics to straighten their teeth, their occlusion (bite relationship) may not be ideal.
As an example, an individual may not have good anterior guidance or a cuspid protected occlusion. There could be interferences preventing the teeth from coming together in a relaxed position or the vertical dimension of the bite is too shallow or open.
Nonetheless, even in an ideal situation, certain personality characteristics of an individual may cause them to grind their teeth. The technical aspects involved in answering your question are too involved to give you a good answer without a clinical examination at the minimum.
