Question:
Teeth grinding with dentures: What is recommended for those who have dentures and grind their teeth, causing gum pain, and continually loose dentures?
This happens during work, such as typing, reading, etc., not just at night. Can a denture wearer use some type of guard? If so, what type should be used? ...Visitor from TX
Answer:
You might be able to wear a soft night guard over your denture (probably would work better on lower).
Also, a dental laboratory in Florida called Sun Dental Laboratory makes a denture with a nylon base that may be more comfortable for you. The material is called Sunflex.
Also, you could use a soft liner (I use a product called Lynal), but this is not permanent. I have heard of hard/soft dentures, but have no experience with them.
I would also recommend that you try taking the dentures out at night to give the tissues and bone a break from constant pressure. The constant pressure can cause bone loss over time.
