Question:
Dentures and TMJ Headaches: In 1996 I had my teeth removed because of gum disease. Due to the bone loss, my dentures have never fit. I have never worn my bottom dentures.
Now I've been told I have TMJ due to ill fitting dentures. Please tell me what can help with this. I have very severe headaches constantly.
One of the reasons I went along with this was the dentist said it would clear up the headaches. Instead, they have been getting worse. I'm at my wits end. ....Visitor from TN
Answer:
I don't understand you have dentures that never fit. You don't wear the bottom - how could tmj problems come from ill fitting dentures!
Your problem is from not having a lower denture... your lower jaw doesn't know where to stop, so its swinging like a hinge, overstressing your temperomandibular joint.
The solution is to find a dentist that can make you dentures that are comfortable. Then work out your bite so it is comfortable. That may even involve bite splints on your dentures! After you are stable you may discuss implants, bar overdentures, dentures with soft liners and other options.
