Minimize Making Symptoms Worse
Limit Jaw Movement
Only open your jaws as far as you feel no pain and avoid wide opening.
For instance, if you feel a yawn coming, restrict it by pressing a fist under your chin or putting your bottom lip up over your bottom teeth which won't allow oyou to open very wide.
Be careful of sub sandwiches (hoagies) or taking huge bites when eating. Being aware of wide mouth openings is half the battle.
Eat A Soft Diet
TMJ sufferers don't have to swtich entirely to liquids and baby food, but avoid foods like raw vegetalbes, nuts, hard rolls and chewy meat such as steak or hard tacos and crunchy potato chips.
For main dishes use pasta and noodles or casseroles and hashes made with chopped or minced meat, fish or eggs. Use cooked vegetables (steamed preferably) and fruits instead of raw ones.
