Question:
For the past few years, I have noticed that the edges of my tongue are irregular. The color is a brighter red that the more pink top of the tongue - as if it were slightly inflamed. The edges are somewhat ridged with white streaks. The edges are more prone to become irritated.
The two dentists who have seen me in the past few years express no real concern with the appearance of my tongue. One described it as a geographic tongue. I have only twenty-four teeth due to orthodonist work and wisdom tooth extraction as a youth.
What causes this condition? Is it indicative of a larger health problem or a some habit I have? What might I do to treat the condition? ...James in CA
Answer:
James, you may be grinding or clenching your teeth at night, which shoves the tongue laterally. You may also have obstructive sleep apnea. You need to go to a sleep center for diagnosis.
Sometimes an irritated tongue could mean a vitamin deficiency, or other health problems. You need a complete physical to ascertain any such problems. Start things the simple way by having your dentist evaluate you for sleep apnea and possibly making you a snoring device.
