Minimally Invasive Oral Surgery Alternative

Today's high powered dental lasers enable more and more less invasive treatment choices in a variety of areas within general and specialty dentistry.

In this video a patient has a crown restoration that broke off at the gum line that includes a metal post. Examination revealed that the remaining tooth structure is fractured and will be difficult to extract, or at least complicated.

The patient elected to have laser assisted oral surgery that eliminated the need to create a tissue flap to expose the jawbone and in fact eliminated the need to use any sharp instruments.

The cool tip of the laser efficiently severed the connective tissue with minimal patient discomfort. Upon extraction, the socket was filled with bone graft material requiring only a few stitches.

No extensive tissue modification was required. Healing is anticpated to be rapid, along with sufficient time to regenerate bone that will be later prepared for a traditional implant. Video footage produced by Marie Schweinebraten, DMD of Atlanta GA
