About Wisdom Teeth Ask Dentists Corinne Scalzitti

Question:
Infection, swelling of gum by new wisdom tooth: The gum area around where my last wisdom tooth is coming in is swollen and infected.

I went to my dentist the first day I felt pain. I was told they can't do much for me because I'm pregnant and in my first Trimester. So he prescribed me Tylenol 3 for the pain as well as amoxicillin and a mouthwash called PerioGard (Chlorhexidine Gluconate).

Its been 3 days and I can barely open my mouth and can't close it all the way either due to the swelling of my gums. The pain is overwhelming. I can't eat anything requiring chewing and it hurts to move my jaw.

Is there anything else I can do to bring the swelling down atleast so I can eat. I'm worried because I'm pregnant. ...Visitor from NC

Answer:
I would recommend that you see an oral surgeon ASAP.

While nobody wants to do anything elective during the first trimester of pregnancy, nobody would also want for you to have a serious infection throughout your pregnancy.

I have heard of medical devices that can feed pain medications directly into a surgical site. There may also be devices that could feed strong antibiotics into the infected wisdom tooth.

Or, you may need to have it extracted in spite of the pregnancy. As soon as the baby is born, I would advise you to have all of your wisdom teeth extracted if you intend to have another pregnancy.
