Wisdom Teeth Extractions Yes or No?

Question:
Extraction: My daughter had her wisdom teeth removed 3 years ago and since then has experienced shooting pain, almost like a nerve radiating from her jaw into her ear.

Could this be directly related to the extraction procedure? It took a good 2 months for her to recover from the wisdom teeth surgery - had a very difficult time. ...Visitor from Canada

Answer:
The radiating pain symptom and involvement of the ear suggests an occlusal disturbance that has affected the tmj joint. TMJ dysfunction can be easily caused by the loss of a tooth.

The adjacent teeth can be modiified by an experienced tmj or neuromuscular dentist to correct the occlusal plane, back to the way it was. Once normal tmj function is restored, the pain symptoms should dissipate quickly.
