Question:
Lower gum and bone loss: I have had dentures for 37 years (I am 57) and my lower ridge is almost gone.
I have aged rapidly due to the loss of bone and wanted to know if there is a reconstructive surgery or bone replacement type surgery to restore your lower bone/gum loss? My mouth is disappearing and my jaw is too. ... Visitor from CA
Answer:
The dental profession has made great progress in augmenting the bone on your lower and upper jaws.
You, however may be pleasantly surprised to know that even though it may appear that all of the bone is gone, you may have enough bone for two or more implants on your lower jaw.
The implants are used to stabilize your lower denture with the addition of a snap type of attachment between your implants and your denture. The addition of implants and attachments will make a huge difference in the stability of the denture and reduce bone loss in the future.
If you need bone added to your jaw, the surgery can be worth your effort so you can have dentures that have much greater chewing power and stability.
