Question:
Root Canals and Bridges: I just got a very expensive bridge and it was a pain from the start.
In any case, I think I need a root canal because the front tooth to which the bridge is attached via a crown is EXTREMELY sensitive to hot and cold and biting in general.
It's been two months and I'm worried that now this tooth will need a root canal. Is that possible?
And, if so, would I have to buy a NEW bridge if the dentist has to take this one off? ... Visitor from GA
Answer:
I can sympathize with you situation. Going through extensive and expensive bridgework is never a great time. Hopefully, things calm down and like childbirth, the satisfaction masks the discomfort you have now.
It is entirely possible that a root canal may be required under your new bridge.
As a Prosthodontist, a dentist who specializes in crowns, I have had that situation develop and no one is ever happy about it. The good news is that most of the time the root canal can be completed through the crown without significant damage and you can avoid remaking the bridge.
