Question:
Crown falls off: My mother had a crown put on and it will not stay seated. It falls off at the drop of a hat.

It obviously doesn't have anything to hold on to. Is there a remedy for seating this crown, or is there an alternative treatment.

It has fallen off three times in as many weeks and the clinic keeps charging her to reseat it. ...Visitor from CA

Answer:
First Possiblity - It is a old crown with decay under it. The tooth structure is soft and decayed and there no longer is enough retention or tooth structure to hold the crown in place. It needs to be remade, the decay needs to be removed and the tooth may need to be built up.

A build up is a bonded material designed to attach to the remaining tooth structure and give the crown more surface area for retention.

Second Possibility - It is a new crown, there may not enough tooth structure to hold it in place. The dentist knows if there is enough tooth structure to hold a crown and it would be rare for a dentist to continue charging for a crown that he or she just made.

Third Possibility - The cementing procedure is being contaminated with moisture and the cement cannot harden properly. It would be highly unusual for this to happen three times in a row. It sounds to me that your mother may need and new crown, she is refusing to get it done and the dentist is merely charging for the time and effort for the treatment that your mother is choosing. I'm just speculating based on the wording of your communication.
