Topic: Apecoectomy
Question:
My assistant just underwent an apecoectomy. I've practiced dentisty for over 20 years and thought that the apex of the tooth was removed for and during this procedure. Her's was not as the endodontist simply removed the overfill of gutta percha.
Did she have a true apecoectomy and won't she still have a problem that may reoccur since the root is remaining? ...Dentist from Kentucky
Answer:
I know this may seem foreign but we no longer remove the tip unless there is a specific need for it.
By removing the foreign body the bone can heal back in around the root tip. If the tooth is not cracked or something like that she should be fine shortly.
Follow Up Question:
My fear though is there may still be tissue in the root apex that caused the defect in the first place. If the root tip is not removed then the possibility remains that this will reoccur. Is that accurate?
Follow Up Answer:
Not in my experience. If you get all the soft granulation tissue out you should be fine. I use the laser to be sure all the soft tissue is out and we have been very happy with the results.
