Invisible Orthodontics Dentist Directory Find an Invisalign Dentist
Question:
Invisalign and bridgework: I have had bridgework and crowns done recently.
I actually have lots of crowns. My teeth are spaced in the front and my dentist convinced me to do Invisalign. He said that it could be done with all the bridgework and crowns.
I already have the first set of retainers and have paid for everything.
I really should have researched it more before agreeing. I decided to read up on people's experience with Invisalign and I couldn't find any info related to my question.
Should Invisalign be done over bridgework and crowns? ...Visitor from NY
Answer:
I am not an orthodontist or an expert but I would seriously question the use of Invialign retainers to move crowns and bridgework. In my experience the need for tooth repositioning or orthodontic improvement prior to major reconstructive dentistry is always diagnosed and completed before any work is done.
If you have had any bridgework done, where missing teeth were replaced by connecting them to surrounding teeth, then orthodontic tooth movement with Invisalign would be very difficult.
Orthodontic movement of teeth takes delicate forces applied to INDIVIDUAL teeth. Essentially the light forces of orthodontics resorbs or dissolves the jawbone on the side of the tooth where it is moving TO and builds back up or is reinforced on the opposite side of the tooth where the tooth moved FROM.
I hope this brief explanation helps you understand a little bit more of how orthodontic treatment moves teeth to the desired postions for a pleasing result.
Thus, if multiple teeth have been connected together with fixed bridgework, how efficently are plastic aligners going to move this numer of teeth at the same time?
I strongly recommend contacting a very good orthodontist in your area for a second opinion of your case and concerns.
