Lock Jaw Ask The Dentist Ara Nazarian Question:
Braces don't fix Lockjaw: I have been suffering from lockjaw for a while.

It happens when I yawn. I have no overbite.

It was surposed to be rectified when I had my brace but not long after it was removed it went back to the position it originally was. ...Visitor from United Kingdom

Answer:
It sounds like you may have a tmj problem which can cause pain, with the jaw locking on opening wide.

In some circumstances having orthodontics can create the problem or a correction of the bite with minor adjustments or even porcelain overlays.

If you haven't been wearing retainers on a permanent basis, which is usually recommended after successful and significant realignment of teeth, this may be a factor.

It is difficult to say without an xray or photos, but I would first suggest going back to your orthodontist to have an evaluation.
