Question:
Crown - root canal - locked jaw: I went in for a crown and my tooth was cracked deep in 2 places so I had a root canal prior to the permanent crown being placed.

5 days after the root canal my jaw locked and now they want to treat me for TMJ. I can open my mouth only to put 1 finger in, what is going on? Is it infection? Or are the 2 things not related? ...Visitor from MI

Answer:
Lock jaw symptoms represent tmj dysfunction that is apparently caused by a change in your bite as a result of the crown treatment.

There is also the remote possibility that the tmj joints were traumatized by having the jaw in an open position for an extended period of time. Muscle relaxants and TENS Unit therapy usually are effective treatments for these temporary situations.

The crown may be sitting too high..... or too low. Sometimes, in an effort to get an accurate diagnosis, seeking treatment from a dentist who specializes in TMJ dentistry may be necessary.
