Question:
Upper Jaw: My husband is considering getting mini-implants as shown in your video, but the DDS only offers them for the bottom denture.
His price is pretty reasonable, but still high. He says it cannot be done for upper dentures, but you've shown that it can.
Is it a good idea for a person to take this route? He has had dentures for over 25 years so he is used to them, but has little bone on the bottom jaw to hold his dentures on now.
Your opinion is appreciated on whether he should really try something like this or not. ... Visitor from TN
Answer:
Unfortunately, you aren't supplying me with the information I need to answer your question. I don't have x-rays, I can't do an examination so there is simply no way to know if your husband is a candidate for mini-implants or traditional implants.
If there is enough bone, implants are always indicated. The amount of bone and the finances allowed will determine the most optimal treatment options.
If your husband has worn dentures for 25 years he probably has insufficient bone for mini-implants in the back of his upper jaw but with sinus grafting he could be a candidate for regular
implants.
Lower denture pain and problems should be addressed first and if you don't have the finances to continue, he can continue to wear the upper denture until you can commit more financially to the upper jaw.
Be aware that bone loss is an ongoing problem and it will get worse over time. This can lead to pain, poor chewing, digestive problems and other health related problems.
In my practice, dentures are considered temporary prostheses.
I wish you the best of luck. You will have to keep looking for someone that can help you based on your needs, financial abilities and goals or you will have to travel to someone that can help you.
