Question:
Overdenture causes bulging of lips: This past June I had a lower denture made after having eight teeth extracted.
When the healing is complete my dentist will install zest applianced in my canines. At present this overdenture bulges out below my lip, not attractive.
My dentist says that when he's done in four more months and I have my permanent denture it will look better but will still protrude somewhat. I've never seen anyone else with this type of denture so I don't know how it's supposed to look.
Do these type of dentures need to be so odd looking? He says they do. ... Visitor from OR
Answer:
Dentures are never ideal nor are they without problems. If you have a lot of bone around your canine teeth than the denture has to go over the root and over the bone.
This can create a fuller look as there is acrylic material where mother nature has never intended acrylic to be. If this is troublesome the dentist should consider extraction of the teeth, smoothing
or reducing the bone and implants in the canine area with attachments on the implants.
Ideally the denture can be made without any extensions if you have more implants and a hybrid prosthesis made. This is a partial that is fixed to the implants - not removable by you... only the dentist.
This type of prosthesis would allow all the excess acrylic over the front of the bone to be removed giving you a more natural appearance. Two implants or two roots is the "minimum" treatment to secure a denture. It is better to have more implants and a hybrid prosthesis or fixed bridges on implants to replicate your natural teeth and smile. Best of luck.
